What are Megillat Kohelet and Sukkot?

The scroll of Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) has traditionally been read during Sukkot, or Tabernacles (Lev. 23). Sukkot not only commemorates G-d's providential care when Israel traveled in booths in the wilderness and G-d dwelled among the people in a tabernacle, but also looks forward to the coming thousand-year reign of peace of Messiah Yeshua, when Yeshua will return to dwell among us again. Sukkot has also been called the feast of Ingathering, and looks forward to the millenial reign when the great ingathering of G-d's people will occur. See Leviticus 23 for the L-RD's origination of this feast.

The traditions of Judaism taught that Ecclesiastes, with its emphasis on the futility of prosperity and mirth, should be read during Sukkot (the most joyful of feasts, celebrating harvest, peace, and well-being). The conclusion of Ecclesiastes teaches that all that matters in the end is fearing G-d and keeping his commandments; prosperity and happiness (though they are true gifts of G-d) are fleeting and immaterial. Sh'lomo (Solomon) also warns us that in times of prosperity we should remember that G-d gives suffering and trials as well:

"In the day of prosperity, be happy, but in the day of adversity, consider: God has made the one as well as the other so that man may not discover anything that will be after him." Kohelet 7:14

"...for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity... I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." Rav Sha'ul (Rabbi Paul), Philippians 4:11-13
