What is Hanukkah? Hanukkah is Hebrew for "dedication," and in this case refers to the dedication of the temple altar following its liberation from pagan defilement. The Festival of Hanukkah memorializes a return to the practices of G-d ordained worship, and is therefore a symbol of religious freedom.
Hanukkah calls to mind the acts of a madman who came to power in 175 b.c.e. He was Antiochus IV, who surnamed himself Ephiphanes, meaning "G-d made manifest." He desecrated the temple altar in Jerusalem as well as the Torah scrolls, and dedicated the Jewish temple to pagan gods. Jerusalem became "a desolation." The L-rd intervened and freed the temple from Antiochus, using some zealous Jews (the Maccabees) to spearhead the effort. These events, which partly fulfill the prophecy of Daniel 11, are historical types, or symbols, of the coming Anti-Messiah referred to in Matt. 24:15 and Rev. 19:19-20.
