The L-rd established Yom Teruah (Day of Trumpets) as a holy day in Leviticus 23:23-24: "And the L-rd spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month [the biblical month Tishri], in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation." Ever since the day that command was issued, the shofar (ram's horn) has been sounded using a series of calls in a specific order, to communicate the meaning of Yom Teruah.
Every feast in Leviticus represents an event which either has been fulfilled or will be fulfilled in the ministry of Yeshua.

Yom Teruah (Day of Trumpets) signifies the day when Yeshua will come for those who are His, and we will all be changed: "Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." 1 Cor 15:51.
Yom Teruah (Day of Trumpets) in traditional Judaism signifies the first day of the Jewish civil year (Rosh ha Shanah, or "Head of the Year"). It is also the first day of the Days of Awe (a period of repentance and introspection culminating ten days later in the Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur. A part of traditional Judaism recognizes the Day of Trumpets as the anniversary of the creation of the world.
There are three themes in Yom Teruah/Rosh HaShanah, according to traditional Judaism: The Sovereignty of G-d, the Remembrance of G-d (of all men's deeds, with justice), The Trumpet of G-d, heralding the initial revelation of G-d at Sinai as well as the final messianic revelation and redemption to come at the end of days.
Messianic believers see Yeshua in Yom Teruah/The Day of Trumpets: "And then shall appear the Son of Man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet." (Mat. 24:30-31)
